Pituitary World News is one-of-a-kind information and news resource with global reach, established in 2014 to educate the public on the pituitary gland and its disorders. Pituitary World News is a collaboration between Lewis Blevins, MD a world-leading neuro-endocrinologist and pituitary expert, and J D Faccinetti, a communications expert and a patient affected by acromegaly, a rare disorder of the pituitary gland affecting thousands of people in the USA and around the world.
Our mission is to bring state-of-the-art and up-to-date information to those seeking answers and information pertaining to health-related matters about pituitary tumors and other pituitary disease processes.
Increased awareness and collaboration will help to diagnose thousands of people suffering around the globe. Pituitary disease can go undiagnosed for decades and confused with a myriad of symptoms – like obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, weight gain, irritability, fatigue, colon polyps, sexual dysfunction, sleep apnea, headaches, vision loss, irregular periods in women, and many more – without focusing on the underlying cause.
Our belief is that patients need to be better informed, and doctors need to have pituitary disorders on their radars, consider it on the list of possibilities. Pituitary World News is a platform under which all current patient education and communication efforts can be more effective in reaching the public.
This is an effort where a physician and a patient are partnering to provide information to people affected by a myriad of pituitary diseases. We think of it as a platform where doctors, patients and their families, researchers, industry experts, and the public at large can come together to raise awareness of these sometimes very hard to detect rare disorders. Pituitary conditions can go undiagnosed for many years so we hope this effort will help more people get diagnosed early and properly.
Dr. Lewis S. Blevins, Jr. is the Medical Director of the California Center for Pituitary Disorders at the University of California San Francisco and Professor of Neurological Surgery and Medicine at UCSF.
