A new three-part podcast series from The Pituitary Society explores these questions through the lens of the updated international consensus recommendations on therapeutic outcomes in acromegaly (Melmed S et al. Nat Rev Endocrinol 2025;21:718–37).
Developed in collaboration with leading global experts in endocrinology, the series brings together members of the international consensus group to examine the evidence, rationale, and practical implications of the updated recommendations for routine clinical care.
The series features Professor Maria Fleseriu, Professor Shlomo Melmed, Professor Mark Gurnell, and Professor Mônica Gadelha, who share insights into some of the most important and evolving areas of acromegaly management.
Exploring the updated recommendations
Across three episodes, the faculty examine the major themes emerging from the updated consensus guidelines, including the assessment of disease control and comorbidities, predictors of treatment response, and approaches to supporting more personalized evidence-based care in clinical practice.
Episode 1: Setting the standards in acromegaly care: In the opening episode, Professor Maria Fleseriu and Professor Shlomo Melmed discuss the development of the consensus recommendations and explore how remission and disease control should be defined and assessed in clinical practice. They also highlight the importance of identifying and managing comorbidities, a key focus of the updated recommendations.
Episode 2: From biomarkers to best practice: Professor Maria Fleseriu and Professor Mark Gurnell focus on predictors of response to medical therapy, including the role of imaging characteristics, pathological and molecular markers, and biochemical parameters in guiding treatment decisions to support individualized patient care.
Episode 3: Personalized care in acromegaly: In the final episode, Professor Maria Fleseriu and Professor Mônica Gadelha discuss the updated treatment algorithm, treatment sequencing, and management approaches for patients with resistant disease.
Why these discussions matter
The updated consensus recommendations reflect both advances in scientific understanding and an increasing recognition of the need for personalized care in acromegaly. While biochemical control remains a central objective, treatment decisions are increasingly informed by a broader range of factors, including tumor characteristics, symptom burden, comorbidities, patient preferences, and quality of life.
