In 2019, when we first featured Risa’s Story and plans to ride the Pacific coast highway – with full acromegaly symptoms, by the way – we opened the article with the “Taking the bull by the horns” idiom. And when she sent us the link to her recent TED talk, I had the same feeling. For our international audience, there’s a debate as to where this phrase originated; some say the American West, while others associate it with Spanish bullfighting. Still, we think it’s very appropriate for this story. It means to confront a difficult or dangerous situation directly and fearlessly, something that patients with rare disorders do every day.
Thanks to Risa for her quest to make acromegaly better known. Here’s her TED talk.
Read more about Risa’s work and listen to our podcasts about her ride and other adventures.
And here’s some more insider information. Risa has 38 Big Sur miles left on her PCH ride, which she couldn’t complete because of a fire that closed a portion of the highway. I plan to join her!
Please help us make acromegaly better known so more people are diagnosed properly and early!
