Overview
This course provides endocrinologists, neurosurgeons, and other providers who care for patients with pituitary disorders with a review and update of the more controversial encountered problems in the realm of pituitary medicine and surgery. Our speakers are recognized experts in the field and several have participated in the development of specialty clinical practice guidelines. Others have written about medical decision-making and the art of medicine. Objectives
Those attending and participating in this course will be able to improve skills and strategies to:
- Evaluate and treat patients with residual and recurrent acromegaly;
- Recognize the caveats in the management of patients with large sellar lesions and design appropriate patient-specific plans for management and follow-up;
- Apply medical decision-making in the management of patients with prolactinomas and recognize when surgery may be most appropriate first line therapy;
- Understand and recognize the controversies regarding endonasal microscopic surgery and endoscopic pituitary surgery and be positioned to educate patients regarding the best surgical approach for their condition;
- Recognize the caveats in the management of Growth Hormone replacement therapy and understand where replacement therapy is most appropriate;
- Recognize and understand the controversies in the management of patients with craniopharyngiomas;
- Interpret basic pituitary imaging studies with an emphasis on magnetic resonance imaging of the sella;
- Recognize and treat patients with Cushing syndrome and understand the caveats of surgical management of these patients;
- Recognize postoperative complications and develop a strategy for evaluation and management of these when they do occur.
